Department
Mechanical Engineering

The objective of the Material Technology laboratory is to give a broad understanding of common materials related to mechanical engineering with an emphasis on the fundamentals of structure-property-application relationships.

The laboratory is equipped with material properties and behaviour testing apparatus. Students can also prepare the sample for studying microstructure using microscope. Effect of heat treatment processes, fatigue test and corrosion rate test can also be conducted in the laboratory.

Lab Objectives:

  1. To familiarise with use of optical laboratory microscope
  2. To acquaint with microstructures of ferrous (steel and cast iron) metals
  3. To familiarise with microstructures of steel under different heat treated conditions
  4. To study hardenability, fatigue test for fatigue strength and corrosion rate test

Major Equipments:

  1. Metallurgical Microscope Binocular
  2. Metallurgical Microscope Trinocular
  3. Jominy End Quench Hardness Test Apparatus
  4. Metallographic Sample Preparation die set
  5. Double Disk Polishing Machine
  6. Fatigue Testing Machine
  7. Abrasive Cut-off Machine
  8. Muffle Furnace
  9. Dessicator
